Last Night:
Ella Amelia Rifkin made her public debut last night in an unscheduled performance in lower Manhattan.
While planned as an informal gathering to support the New York Giants bid to reach the Super Bowl, the night quickly eclipsed all expectations.
Beginning with a solo acoustic "This Little Light of Mine" Ella quickly had the whole room singing along.
Unlike most artists these days, Ella was not afraid to take the old standard into new territory as she pushed the tempo into double time and drove the crowd into a frenzy.
It's this kind of risk taking that will take her far as her music career continues.
Due to the overwhelming and unanimous crowd support, Ella returned a short time later for an encore performance.
Continuing to keep the crowd on their feet, Ella returned this time with an octet featuring Mom & Dad.
This big band setting allowed Ella to show off her seldom seen arranging skills resulting in a symphonic version of "Little Liza Jane" like I'd never heard before.
The impact of this performance will be felt for years to come much like the NYC breakthrough of Bruce Springsteen at the Bottom Line years earlier.
While this reviewer did not have an all access pass, word out of the green room was that after two books, Ms. Rifkin once again broke into song.
My hunch is that we will be seeing an extended tour later in the spring but for now Ella would only confirm that she would return to school on Tuesday.
