Zulu Parade - New Orleans 2/28/06

Sad news out of New Orleans compounded by more sad news. My friends Phil & Keith Frazier lost their younger brother, Kerwin James last week. Kerwin suffered a stroke shortly after Katrina and passed away from the resulting complications. My deepest condolences to the entire family.
As is tradition, many musicians gathered on Monday to pay tribute by second lining through his Treme neighborhood. NOPD had other ideas and swarmed the scene arresting two musicians. Click HERE to read more about the whole incident.
It's hard to express how many things are wrong with this. The total lack of respect for the mourners is shocking but equally shocking might be the lack of respect for the great cultural traditions of this city. If a spontanious second line can't happen without a paid permit to honor a passed musician then they just managed to cut another slice out of the heart of this great city.
Very sad indeed.

Last Night:
On a much happier note, the great Dee Dee Bridgewater returned to the stage of the Blue Note this week. Last nights performance featured songs from her new CD, "Red Earth, A Malian Journey". Very highly recomended. She continues her residency through Sunday.
